The Bread and Puppet Theater is one of the United States’ most celebrated socially engaged theater companies. Founded in 1963, the theater is one of the oldest nonprofit, independent theater companies in the US. They perform all over the world, particularly in the open air—in public parks and on the streets—under the slogan “Cheap Art and Political Theater”.
Diagonal Llife: Theory and Praxis uses the humblest of means—cardboard legs, a starry sky made of garlic, a 60 watt lightbulb, paper maché tigers, music from the Sacred Harp, text from speeches by climate activist Greta Thunberg—to point out the possibilities inherent to precariousness of our current condition: we are on the verge of collapse, yet always capable of uprising. The show takes place in and around a stage built out of 7’x4′ paintings by the theater’s director, Peter Schumann.
