Altercation of the Mundane
presented by Circus Culture, performed and devised by Ithaca NY’s Fern Collective (Alice Knipe, Cora Williams, Nuala Hill, Izzy Tenorio, Miley Charsky, Nuala Ugine, and Lily Ryan).
Performances:
Thursday May 5th, 8 PM
Friday May 6th, 8 PM
Saturday May 7th, 3 PM and 8 PM
Sunday May 8th, 3 PM
Circus artists use group acrobatics, soundscape, unicycle, dance, and tumbling to explore the reality that life without individuality and meaning is pointless. After two years of creation amidst the Covid-19 pandemic, Ithaca’s Fern Collective is bringing their truly unique and authentic voice to venues in Brooklyn, Rochester, Syracuse, Homer, and Ithaca, NY.
“As you go through life, what do you do when you realize that this simple accepted rhythm is unhealthy? You can either go back to your safe, trapped, and easy existence, or dive into the uncomfortable conclusion that life without individuality and meaning is pointless. It’s scary and feels unsafe as we are conditioned to not stray from the pack, but it’s needed. Join us into the plunge of what it means to be a human, not just humans. Throw a wrench into the system and discover what it’s like to dive into the pit.”
The collective of artists, who happen to be 15 to 18 years old, have formed a collective and created the show independently in order to ensure that everything from act creation to merchandise is representative of who they are and what they stand for. The show is sure to give you an authentic glimpse into the human experience in this very moment – there is more than meets the eye and much to learn from these dynamic young artists.
The show has been rated PG-13 by the artists, and is not intended for children.

Exhibition runs April 1 – May 27
confluencial presents the work of al aguas and Sonja Lockhart together. Individually submerging into their experiences of Black and Indigenous peoples’ vitality in bountiful to barren social scapes, they recognize the refuge in turning to landscapes, creating an opening for merging an ever changing stream of connections between them. What emerges from these hxstories passed and lived threads into their works…Speaking to themes including isolation, growth, and what a restorative relationship to lands of historical violence can look like, Sonja integrates her public health and environmental science background, as well as her lived experience as a Black resident of Ithaca into a photographic series of landscapes. al converges with these specifically as they pertain to queer, disabled, and repeatedly repressed community, land, and body. Together their work functions to emit narratives of peoples and places who traverse, and sustain, delicate landscapes.
Artist Bios:
al aguas seeks communion of intentional physicalities and incorporeal intimacies through a fractal working of textiles, sculpture, dance, and written word. They envision a space where their intersectional identity is calibrated and stimulated at the artists’ discretion, as they are a trans, disabled Zapotec writer and youth educator.
Sonja Lockhart is a public health professional and artist who is passionate about advancing health equity. She is currently pursuing her Masters in Public Health at Cornell University where she is focusing on food systems and thinking about how to transform local food environments to support community health and wellbeing. Sonja also has had a background in film photography for over ten years.

On view: the climate will determine the green of the future forests
Graphic design students from the Ithaca College Art Department Graphic Design Program, under the guidance of Professor Patti Capaldi, exhibit a series of posters designed to address the challenging issues of climate change and extreme weather. This project explores how graphic design can be used to effect change and the impacts designers can have on influencing, motivating, and educating the public regarding advocacy issues. “Design for good” uses strategic design thinking and processes to bring about positive outcomes and impact.
The exhibition will be on view February 4 to March 25, 2022. All visitors are required to wear masks inside the CSMA building.

Event Details
Finished Waiting will be a brand new show created by Peter Schumann in collaboration with the Bread & Puppet company. According to Peter the show will star “the clock and it’s customers, skies, cities, mountains, forward dancers, backward dancers, a stop officer, and an eye divinity who teaches seeing to non-suspecting eyes.”
Tickets at the door: $10-$25 suggested donation, no one turned away for lack of funds.
Masks are required for all audience members.
The Bread and Puppet Theater was founded in 1963 by Peter Schumann on New York City’s Lower East Side. Besides rod-puppet and hand puppet shows for children, the concerns of the first productions were rents, rats, police, and other problems of the neighborhood. More complex theater pieces followed, in which sculpture, music, dance and language were equal partners. During the Vietnam War, Bread and puppet staged block-long processions and pageants involving hundreds of people.
In 1974 Bread and Puppet moved to a farm in Glover in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont. The 140-year old hay barn was transformed into a museum for veteran puppets. THeir Domestic Resurrection Circus, a two day outdoor festival of puppetry shows, was presented annually through 1998.
Today, the company makes its income from touring new and old productions both on the American continent and abroad, and from sales of Bread and Puppet Press’ posters and publications. The traveling puppet shows range from tightly composed theater pieces presented by members of the company to extensive outdoor pageants which require the participation of many volunteers. Bread and Puppet continues to be one of the oldest, nonprofit, political theatre companies in the country.
