Exhibition runs April 1 – May 27

confluencial presents the work of al aguas and Sonja Lockhart together. Individually submerging into their experiences of Black and Indigenous peoples’ vitality in bountiful to barren social scapes, they recognize the refuge in turning to landscapes, creating an opening for merging an ever changing stream of connections between them. What emerges from these hxstories passed and lived threads into their works…Speaking to themes including isolation, growth, and what a restorative relationship to lands of historical violence can look like, Sonja integrates her public health and environmental science background, as well as her lived experience as a Black resident of Ithaca into a photographic series of landscapes. al converges with these specifically as they pertain to queer, disabled, and repeatedly repressed community, land, and body. Together their work functions to emit narratives of peoples and places who traverse, and sustain, delicate landscapes.

Artist Bios:
al aguas seeks communion of intentional physicalities and incorporeal intimacies through a fractal working of textiles, sculpture, dance, and written word. They envision a space where their intersectional identity is calibrated and stimulated at the artists’ discretion, as they are a trans, disabled Zapotec writer and youth educator.

Sonja Lockhart is a public health professional and artist who is passionate about advancing health equity. She is currently pursuing her Masters in Public Health at Cornell University where she is focusing on food systems and thinking about how to transform local food environments to support community health and wellbeing. Sonja also has had a background in film photography for over ten years.
