Patti Capaldi’s Drift

May 1, 2021

Through the month of August, experience Drift by Patti Capaldi, a visual artist, designer, and assistant professor at Ithaca College. This compelling piece explores the pandemic lexicon using a piece of driftwood the artist found on the banks of Cayuga Lake while taking a summer swim during the pandemic. The scanned driftwood represents the “unmoored” state the pandemic has created and is used symbolically to set up a visual dialog between it and the lexicon that has filled our lives since last year. The “infographic” questions classification systems—both in nature and in language—and the ways we assign value through them.
