COVID19 Appeal

Dear Friends of CSMA,

As many of you have been made aware, CSMA is closed to the public until further notice in response the COVID-19 pandemic.

All classes, lessons, ensembles, school break programs, and events in our spaces have been suspended for the immediate future, out of deep concern and care for our community and in conformance with all government directives. Our doors have been locked to the public since Monday, March, 16 at 6:00 PM, and as of today, staff are only working remotely.

While these have been painful decisions for the board and leadership to make, this is unquestionably the only appropriate course of action. Rigorous measures implemented over recent weeks to increase disinfection and social distancing practices throughout our facility are simply no longer enough at this time.

Though our studios and gathering spaces are now quietly empty, we are working hard to continue offering programs and sustain the organization during the uncertain weeks and months ahead.  Here are some updates:

Virtual instruction. We realize nothing parallels the experience of private lessons and studio classes in person, but online instruction offers its own unique merits, now more than ever. We are now offering private lessons with many of CSMA’s talented faculty artists. If you are already taking private lessons and wish to explore this option with your instructor, please reach out to them directly.  If you would like to try virtual instruction you can fill out the form here.

Spring classes for adults and youth. Though it appears unlikely we will hold spring classes as designed and scheduled to begin mid-April, please view them on our website. It is possible they may only be postponed. If you would love to take a class at CSMA when it’s deemed safe to do so, please register online and pay later. No commitment, and no payments are being accepted at this time.

Summer camps for youth. We’ve been so excited about our camp lineup for 2020, including two new programs! If you’d like to reserve a spot for your child to experience arts camps at CSMA when it’s deemed safe to do so, please register online and pay later. No commitment, and no payments are being accepted at this time.

Memberships and financial contributions. If you have the means, we need your financial help now, please. Memberships and donations will continue to be gratefully accepted throughout this crisis. Your generosity will help minimize loss of work for CSMA’s faculty and staff during this unprecedented closure, and will strengthen CSMA’s resiliency and capacity to reopen in the future. Please visit our website for memberships. Charitable donations may be made online (preferred) or by mailing checks to CSMA.

Words only begin to express our thanks for your patience and continued support during this exceedingly difficult time. We will keep you updated and look forward to welcoming you back whenever and however possible.

Meanwhile, please be safe and continue to make art, with all your heart, at home.

With fortitude,

Robin Tropper-Herbel
Executive Director

Diversity and Inclusion

The Community School of Music and Arts (CSMA) is committed to creating a diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment that is welcoming for all.

We recognize that the arts uniquely empower the exploration and understanding of identity, and that artistic expression of diverse cultures and communities strengthens the vibrancy of our organization at every level.

Our mission supports education, production, presentation, and enjoyment of the arts by diverse communities, groups, and individuals, inclusive of all regardless of race, ethnicity, national origin, language, age, sex, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, mental and physical ability, class, and religion.

In conducting all CSMA business and programs, we will consistently work to develop and maintain:

  • an organization-wide understanding of the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion;
  • an organizational culture that supports, reflects, and promotes equitable and inclusive behaviors and practices;
  • recruitment and retention policies that foster diversity of our Board of Trustees, staff, faculty, and volunteers;
  • policies and procedures that ensure fair treatment, access, and opportunity at CSMA, and that prohibit acts of discrimination, bias, and harassment;
  • program offerings that include a plurality of cultures in content and artistic genres;
  • a welcoming environment and facility that offers a sense of belonging and respect for diverse identities and communities, and encourages participation by all in our programs.

Individuals with disabilities may request reasonable accommodations by contacting CSMA’s office.
