A native of New York City, Miriam Rice lived in Spain, New Jersey, Florida, New Hampshire, and Japan before coming to Ithaca in 1981. She has taught languages and literature at Bloomfield College, the University of Florida, the Japanese-American Conversation Institute in Tokyo, Japan and Cornell. Art, music, and literature have always been her deepest interests and she has enjoyed sketching and painting all her life. North Light’s “Fundamentals of Art” course led her in 1994 to begin a serious study of watercolor painting, which she has found a wonderfully satisfying medium. She finds inspiration for her painting in everything from sunlight on every-day objects to the beauties of nature and scenes of the countries in which she has lived and traveled, particularly Spain, Italy, and Japan. She has exhibited her work at CSMA (where she won a Best in Show in a juried watercolor exhibit), the State of the Art Gallery, the Tompkins County Public Library, the McMillan Gallery and in Ithaca Art Walks.
